David Butler, MD


David K. Butler, MD, is a Principal with The Chartis Group in the Clinical Informatics and Technology practice. His career in healthcare has spanned over 20 years as an internist and pediatrician, physician executive, and consultant. For much of his career, David has served in dual clinical and administrative roles within medium- to large-sized integrated delivery networks before transitioning to full-time clinical informatics leadership roles. 

David has extensive experience across a wide range of academic and non-academic healthcare delivery systems. David is an industry expert and respected thought leader in Electronic Health Record (EHR) implementation, stabilization, and ongoing optimization. He has advised organizations on clinical and IT governance, assessment, and identification of high-value optimization opportunities, systemization and reduction of clinical variation, quality, and safety improvement, and realization of value from EHR implementation. In addition, he has worked with health systems to develop post-live support and prioritization strategies. 

Prior to joining Chartis, David founded Calyx Partners, a healthcare IT consultancy. At Calyx, he worked with medium- to large-sized healthcare delivery systems, health plans, software vendors, and the life sciences. His focus on technology adoption within healthcare systems helped to create effective population health programs, patient portal services, physician burnout mitigation techniques, and more robust clinical and IT alignment. Prior to Calyx, David served as a Vice President at Sutter Health where he had leadership responsibilities for all EHR implementation and support and optimization initiatives across a 24-hospital system in Northern California. 

David is a national speaker, author, and thought leader on topics including population health, EHR optimization, clinical decision support (CDS), change management, and physician burnout. He is also on the teaching faculty at the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives’ (CHIME) “CMIO/CHIO Leadership Academy.” Most recently, David was selected as an “Interoperability Hero” by DirectTrust for his significant contributions to advancing interoperability. In 2021, David was chosen as a “Fellow of the American Medical Informatics Association” (FAMIA) for career contributions and professional accomplishments to the field of Applied Clinical Informatics (ACI). In 2013, Epic Systems chose David as the ‘Physician of the Year’ (PACademy Award ®) for his meaningful contribution to Epic Systems and healthcare clients. He has published numerous papers and is frequently cited in industry media. 

David completed his clinical training at Baylor College of Medicine with a focus on Internal Medicine and Pediatrics. He received his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical School, Houston. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Biology from Texas A&M University.
