Health Ecosystem of the Future

The Buzz This Week

We featured healthcare disruptors in a recent edition of Top Reads. Several announcements this past week warrant a brief update:

In a new partnership with Transcarent, Walmart has entered the self-insured employer market. Employers that contract with Transcarent — currently 100 self-insured companies with a total of 1 million employees — will get a portion of savings when their employees seek lower-cost care at Walmart through their growing set of healthcare offerings.

Walgreens has invested more than $5 billion to take a majority stake in primary care start-up VillageMD and home health benefit management company CareCentrix. Walgreens has already opened more than 50 primary care clinics with VillageMD, competing with CVS in the primary care and urgent care clinic space. Walgreens and VillageMD have announced plans to open 1,000 clinics inside Walgreens stores by 2027. CareCentrix will advance Walgreens’ presence in home care and the post-acute care space.

Best Buy is acquiring Current Health, a tech company that offers remote patient monitoring and telehealth services. This extends Best Buy’s presence in the home care market — in 2018, Best Buy acquired GreatCall, an emergency response system vendor for the elderly population.
