Building off the quantitative success of all-payer hospital models like Maryland, coupled with directives to improve health equity in U.S. healthcare, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) soon will be opening applications for up to 8 states to become part of the 11-year All-Payer Health Equity Approaches and Development (AHEAD) pilot program.

Health systems should begin to evaluate the opportunity within this program and size the impact it could have for their organization, should their state participate.
