Jackson Nell is an Associate Partner in Strategic Transformation at Chartis. He brings ten years of consulting experience to the firm, particularly in the areas of academic medical center funds flow, faculty effort and compensation, enterprise governance, and academic-clinical operating models.
His work concentrates on the decisions that sit between a health system, its school of medicine, its clinical departments, and its faculty: how money should move across the enterprise, how compensation should relate to clinical productivity and academic contribution, who holds which decision rights, and what financial discipline is needed to sustain the clinical, research, and education missions together. He pairs rigorous enterprise financial modeling with close attention to incentives, organizational dynamics, and implementation, so that economically sound designs also hold up inside the institution. His counterparts have included deans, chief executive, financial, and medical officers, hospital presidents, practice plan leaders, and clinical department chairs.
Prior to joining Chartis, Jackson was a Director at Huron Consulting Group, where he led multi-year academic medical center engagements. For a large public academic health system, he directed a portfolio of up to 11 concurrent workstreams spanning funds flow, faculty effort and compensation, budget model redesign, workforce strategy, credentialing, and governance. That work established a faculty effort policy adopted across more than 3,000 faculty, created a funding and effort committee to govern more than $1 billion in annual clinical funds flow, and delivered an integrated decision-support model across 19 clinical departments linking effort, funding, staffing, and administrative infrastructure.
He also led a faculty compensation redesign for a clinical department at another academic medical center, directed a redesign of medical staff credentialing and privileging across three hospitals and more than 4,000 providers, and supported faculty effort, compensation, governance, and merger assessments at academic institutions across the country. Earlier, Jackson spent five years at EAB, where he led strategy research for university presidents, provosts, and chief financial and research officers on business model sustainability, mergers and partnerships, and federal policy.
Jackson co-led Huron's Academic Health Council, which shaped the firm's academic medical center methodology and market insights, and co-authored its signature thought leadership publication on the effects of national policy on academic institutions. At EAB, he authored Fundamentals of Consolidation in Higher Education, presented research on the alternative credential market to more than 100 college and university presidents in partnership with Google, and was quoted on institutional strategy and policy in Inside Higher Ed and on NPR's Marketplace.
Jackson received his Bachelor of Arts with distinction in government and history from the University of Virginia, where he was a member of the Raven Society and received the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award, the university's highest student honor for distinguished service.
