Tonya Edwards, MD
Tonya Edwards, MD is a Principal with The Chartis Group. Dr. Edwards has over 25 years of experience in healthcare as a family physician, physician executive and consultant. She is board certified in both Family Practice and Clinical Informatics. For much of her career she served in dual roles as a practicing clinician and operational leader in diverse environments from private practice to large integrated delivery networks. It was over this time that she developed her passion for transforming clinical care to support improved quality of care and enhanced patient and provider experience. Dr. Edwards has extensive experience in clinical operations, performance improvement, informatics, population health, physician engagement and change management.
Dr. Edwards’ recent work has focused on clinical process improvement and technology enablement. She has advised organizations on clinical and IT governance, assessment and identification of high-value optimization opportunities, systemization and reduction of clinical variation, quality and safety improvement, and realization of value from EHR implementation. In addition, she has worked with health systems to develop post-live support strategies and develop clinical informatics programs designed to effectively align IT and clinical operations in improvement activities. Dr. Edwards has also assisted organizations in developing business requirements for population health, selecting population health software tools and developing analytics programs to support value-based payment initiatives.
Prior to joining The Chartis Group, Dr. Edwards led the Clinical Performance Solutions practice at Impact Advisors, a healthcare IT consultancy. During her tenure at Impact Advisors, she led development of practice methodology and was responsible for all operational activities as well as delivery leadership. She drove significant growth in service areas including physician leadership and clinical informatics, clinical optimization, and population health and analytics. Prior to this role, she served as Medical Director of Informatics for Bon Secours Health System where she had physician leadership responsibilities for EHR implementation and optimization as well as leadership responsibilities for primary care, patient-centered medical home and value-based care.
Dr. Edwards is a national speaker and thought leader on topics including clinical performance improvement, population health infrastructure and technology needs, change management and physician engagement. She has published numerous papers and has been frequently cited in industry media.
Dr. Edwards received her medical degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School. She completed her residency in family practice at Greenville Health System. She went on to receive her Masters of Medical Management degree from Carnegie Mellon University and is a Certified Physician Executive. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies from the University of Virginia where she graduated with honors. Dr. Edwards is board certified in Family Practice through the American Board of Family Medicine and in Clinical Informatics through the American Board of Preventive Medicine.
